Look After Your Lawn

Planting
There are two options to the gardener when it comes to planting a lawn. You can seed a new lawn from scratch, which although takes the most time and attention, it is not only the cheapest option but you will also have deeper rooted grass making it more durable. Seed in early summer, early autumn or spring when the ground is a little warmer and the air cooler.

If time is of the essence then you may want to consider sodding. This means buying lawn that has already been grown in rolls and can get you a "quick fix" lawn. It is not only more expensive than seeding your own lawn it is also more likely to get damaged during sustained dry periods. It can be laid during any time of the year, unless very cold.

Maintenance
Once you have your lawn ready you will want to ensure that it is well looked after. There are many fertilizers available on the market, with either instant or time release applications. Pesticides and fungicides are also available, although it is not recommended these are used on a new lawn - typically you need to leave a newly laid lawn at least 6 weeks or you risk damaging the young grass.

If your lawn is suffering from drought or has yellow and brown patches keep off it as much as possible and do not cut it below 2 inches. Water twice a day (early in the morning and late in the afternoon when the air is coolest to reduce water loss through evaporation) as this will keep the water levels higher in the soil allowing the grass the best chance of regrowth. Where the grass is looking the most brown use a fork to allow the water to get straight to the lawn's roots.

Mowing
Don't cut your lawn too short. This is known as "scalping" and it's a myth that this prevents grass from growing quicker. You shouldn't cut the grass less than 1", ideally it should be left between 1"-2" long. If you cut it too short you increase the chances of lawn disease, moss and weed growth.

When cutting, never cut more than a third of the height of the grass in any one mow. It is important to keep your mower in good condition and keep those mower blades sharp. If you own a particularly large lawn you may wish to consider buying a ride on mower as this will greatly reduce the amount of time to maintain it.

If your push or ride on mower runs out of fuel try not to refuel on the lawn. Any spillages will scorch the lawn. Also, try to remove the cut grass from the lawn if you can grass clippings can encourage lawn thatch which moss thrives upon.
