Stopping Grass Sticking to Lawn Mower Decks

Stopping grass sticking to lawnmower decks using graphite

Industrial Lawn Mowers

A constant problem associated with cutting grass is the accumulation of grass and dirt under the deck of lawnmowers due to residual moisture in the grass and grass stems. If graphite is painted on the underneath of the deck it provides a dry slippery surface to which the debris has difficulty bonding.

Since the grass produces some sap there will be some residue which can be easily washed off. Graphite is impervious to acids so no etching takes place. Graphite as a substance is soft and will wear, though experience shows that for a residential situation averaging one cutting per week a heavy coating will last a season. Commercial operations require bi monthly touch up usually by aerosol.

Graphite can be painted on either by brush or aerosol spray. The brush gives a heavier coat but is harder to apply versus the easy spray from an aerosol. The essential basic to a successful coating is to allow the first coat to bond for 24 hours before applying a second coat or using the mower. This allows for a tight bond between the deck and the coating due to evaporation of the binder carrier.

Preparation of the deck is important since all loose flakes and particles should be removed. It would be nice to have the deck sandblasted but that is utopia and most times not practical. Oils and grease should be removed. When in operation the graphite will wear under the cutting edge area and if dry can resemble polished steel. To touch up that surface simply apply another coat of graphite.

The graphite coating recommended by Wilmar Graphite, the company writing this article is Clean Deck® which has a unique bonding system with a carrier that evaporates faster than most paints. It also has a smoother surface due to the graphite being finely ground.
